A multi-needle embroidery machine stitching a logo onto the front of a baseball cap mounted on a cap frame

The best embroidery machine for hats and shirts, and why hats change everything

Almost any embroidery machine can do a shirt. Structured caps need a cap frame and a machine built to drive it, which in practice means a multi-needle machine. Here's how to choose.

Spec review · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

If you'll stitch hats as well as shirts, buy a multi-needle machine with a cap system. A structured baseball cap has to ride on a curved cap frame mounted to a cap driver, and only multi-needle machines take one. Our pick is the Poolin EOM-15, which ships with a cap station and two cap hoops. Shirts only, with patches for the odd hat? A 5x7 home machine like the Brother PE900 costs a fraction as much.

How we picked

One rule did most of the filtering: a machine only counts as "good for hats" here if its listing describes a cap system, cap frame or cap embroidery. Several popular "for hats" lists include machines that can't take a cap frame at all, and we left those out.

From there we compared flat embroidery area (it decides whether a hoodie back or jacket back fits), Amazon rank and ratings (checked October 3, 2026) and the seller support each listing describes. Specs are taken only from each manufacturer's Amazon listing.

This is a spec review. We compared listings and owner feedback and did no hands-on stitching. How we research.

Why hats are the hard part

A shirt lies flat in a hoop. A structured cap won't: the front panel is curved and stiff, there's a seam down the middle, and the brim is in the way. So the cap gets clamped onto a curved cap frame, the frame slides onto a cap driver, and the driver rotates the cap around the machine's arm while the design stitches.

Right: a cap seen from above wrapped around a cylindrical cap driver, showing the front area and the wider 270-degree area some machines can reach. Top view. A standard cap frame reaches the front panel; "270-degree" systems also reach the sides and back.

That driver needs a free-standing arm to fit around, which is how multi-needle machines are built. It's why cap frames are sold for them and not for single-needle home machines. Brother's own PR-series cap frame and driver set lists compatibility only with its PR multi-needle models, and its field is 130 x 60 mm (about 5 x 2.4 inches).

The best embroidery machines for hats and shirts

Best overall for hats and shirts

Poolin EOM-15

Of everything we found on Amazon, this is the most complete hat-and-shirt package. It arrives ready for caps, with a cap station and two cap hoops. Poolin lists a 270-degree cap system that reaches the sides and back of the cap as well as the front. Structured or unstructured, either works, and so does 3D puff. Five flat hoops run from 2.4 x 1.6 inches up to 14 x 7.9 inches, so left-chest logos and hoodie backs are both covered.

The production features are what a 15-needle machine should have: automatic color change and thread trimming, thread-break detection, and laser positioning so a logo lands in the same spot on every shirt. A stand comes with it, along with thread and prewound bobbins. You also get 50 sheets of cut-away stabilizer. Measure first. It weighs 165 pounds.

Owners give it a 4.7-star average from about 190 ratings. Before you buy, Smartstitch offers live demo appointments, and online engineer support continues after the sale.

Best-selling compact multi-needle

Smartstitch S-1001

On October 3, 2026 no multi-needle machine ranked higher in Amazon's Embroidery Machines category: #7, with 100+ bought in the past month and a 4.8-star average. It's compact, and at 93 pounds it's light by multi-needle standards. Smartstitch lists caps among the items it stitches, but the listing doesn't say which cap frame is in the box. If hats are your main product, confirm the cap kit with the seller before ordering.

Quiet 12-needle option

Smartstitch S-1201 Plus

A middle step between the S-1001 and S-1501. You get 12 needles and a 12 x 16 inch area, which Smartstitch claims is the largest among machines with fewer than 15 needles, plus a guiding system it calls its quietest. Caps are among the listed items. Same caveat as the S-1001: ask the seller what cap frame comes in the box.

Best if you want Brother

Brother PR680W bundle

Staying with Brother and its PES-based software? This bundle pairs Brother's 6-needle Entrepreneur machine with a universal cap frame and a stand. Brother lists an 8 x 12 inch area and a crosshair droplight laser accurate to plus or minus 0.5 mm. Designs transfer wirelessly, the machine sends alerts to your phone, and color sort is built in. Two drawbacks: the bundle had no Amazon ratings when we checked, and six needles means more manual thread changes on busy designs.

Best home machine for shirts

Brother PE900

For a shop that's mostly shirts, with patches for hats, a single-needle 5x7 machine is the low-cost route. The PE900 handles left-chest logos and center-chest designs up to 5 x 7 inches. It trims jump stitches automatically and reorders colors to cut down thread changes, and it was #3 in Amazon's Embroidery Machines category. Structured hats are out, because it can't take a cap frame.

These sizes are common starting points, not rules. Adjust to the garment and the design, and see our hoop sizes guide.

T-shirts and polos are knits, and knits stretch. Back them with no-show mesh or cut-away stabilizer; tear-away lets the design distort. Our stabilizer guide has the details.

Doing hats on a home machine

An embroidered patch being placed on a trucker hat
Patches are the home embroiderer's route to hats.

No budget for a multi-needle machine? Patches are the dependable route. Stitch the design on twill with a satin border, cut it out, and sew, glue or heat-apply it to the hat. That works on any cap.

Beanies and soft unstructured caps can sometimes be opened at the back seam, or embroidered before they're assembled, and then hooped with stabilizer like any flat item.

You'll also see third-party cap hoops sold for home machines. They hold the cap flat in a standard hoop instead of rotating it, so results are limited, and many have low ratings. Read the reviews closely before buying one.

Questions people ask

Can a home embroidery machine do hats?
Not structured caps, in practice. Single-needle home machines like the Brother PE900 embroider flat fabric clamped in a hoop. You can embroider unstructured or opened-up hats, or stitch a patch and attach it, but for regular structured baseball caps you need a machine with a cap frame and cap driver, which means a multi-needle machine.
What embroidery machine is best for hats and shirts?
For a business or serious hobby, a multi-needle machine with a wide-angle cap system. The Poolin EOM-15 includes a cap station and two cap hoops and lists 270-degree cap embroidery; the Smartstitch S-1501 lists a 270-degree wide-angle cap system and a 14x20-inch flat area. For shirts only, a 5x7 home machine like the Brother PE900 works well.
What size embroidery do you need for a hat?
Most cap fronts take designs around 2 to 2.5 inches tall and up to about 5 inches wide. Brother's PR-series cap frame, for example, lists a 130 x 60 mm field, about 5 by 2.4 inches.
What size embroidery is a left-chest logo on a shirt?
Left-chest logos are commonly around 3 to 4 inches wide, which fits easily in a 4x4 hoop. Full-front shirt designs need 5x7 or larger.
What stabilizer do you use for hats?
Structured caps are usually embroidered with a tear-away stabilizer made for caps, such as precut cap backing. For T-shirts and polos, use cut-away or no-show mesh so the design doesn't distort when the knit stretches.
Do I need a multi-needle machine for hats?
For structured caps, effectively yes. Multi-needle machines have a free-standing arm that a cylindrical cap driver fits around, and they change colors automatically. That's why cap frames are sold for multi-needle models like Brother's PR series, not for single-needle home machines.
