Buy Brother if you want the most easy-to-use features for your money, or if you'll ever embroider. Buy a Singer Heavy Duty if you'll sew a lot of denim, canvas or upholstery. Both brands make solid machines at every price; the right choice depends far more on the specific model and what you'll sew than on the name on the front.
How we compared the brands
Brand comparisons are usually opinion. We based this one on evidence you can check:
- Amazon best-seller ranks in Sewing Machines, Sergers and Embroidery Machines, and "bought in the past month" counts, all recorded on October 3, 2026.
- Head-to-head model pairs at similar prices, using each manufacturer's Amazon listing for specs.
- Owner ratings: counts and averages from the same listings.
This is a spec review: we compared listings and owner feedback, not hands-on sewing. How we research.
The sales scoreboard
Here's where each brand's best sellers ranked in Amazon's Sewing Machines category on October 3, 2026:
| Category | Brother's best rank | Singer's best rank |
|---|---|---|
| Sewing machines | #1 (XM2701) | #5 (Heavy Duty 4432) |
| Sergers and overlock | #1 (1034D) | #2 (X5004-HD) |
| Embroidery machines | #1, #2, #3 (SE700, PE545, PE900) | Not in the top results we checked |
The pattern is clear: Brother sells more across the board, but Singer's Heavy Duty machines are right up there in sewing machines, and they're among the most-reviewed machines on Amazon (the 4423 has more than 21,000 ratings).

The Brother ST371HD has 37 stitches, an auto-size buttonhole and six feet, and Brother markets it as heavy duty, but its listing doesn't give motor or speed figures. How the brands differ in general

Brother: features per dollar
Brother's entry line consistently includes automatic needle threaders, jam-resistant drop-in bobbins and auto-size buttonholes even on its cheapest full-size machines, and its listings advertise free technical support by phone, chat or online for the life of the machine. It also has the dominant home embroidery line on Amazon.
Singer: power and metal
Singer's identity on Amazon is the Heavy Duty family: metal frames, stainless-steel bedplates, high top speeds and motors described as 50% to 60% stronger than standard. If your projects are bulky, Singer's specs are aimed at you. Singer also counts "stitch applications" instead of built-in stitches, so compare stitch numbers carefully: the Heavy Duty 4452 has 32 built-in stitches that Singer counts as 110 applications.
Support and parts
Both brands are sold widely, and common parts like bobbins, feet and bobbin cases for popular models are easy to find on Amazon. The Singer Heavy Duty 4552 listing, for example, specifies Class 15 bobbins; check your manual before buying spares for either brand.

The line-ups, simplified
Both brands sell dozens of models, many of them the same machine in different colors or bundles. On Amazon, the families that matter are:
| Family | Brother | Singer |
|---|---|---|
| Basic and portable | XM2701 (27 stitches), XM3700 and GX37 (37 stitches), FB1757X (17 stitches, mechanical) | M1500 (6 stitches, 57 applications) |
| Entry computerized | CS5055 (60), CS7000X (70), XR9550 (165), CS7205 (150) | Quantum Stylist 9960 (600) |
| Heavy duty, dial-select | ST371HD (37) | 4411, 4423, 4432, 4452, plus the newer Heavy Duty 4511, 4523 and 4552 "Next Evolution" models |
| Heavy duty, computerized | ST150HDH (50) | 6700C (411 applications), 6800C (586 applications) |
| Sergers | 1034D, ST4031HD | X5004-HD, HD0500S, S0100, S0230 |
| Embroidery | SE700, SE2000 (combos); PE545, PE900 (embroidery only) | SE9180 (combo) |
Stitch figures are built-in stitches for Brother and Singer's own "stitch applications" counts where Singer gives only those.
Which brand for what you sew
Clothes and alterations
Either brand works. Look for a one-step buttonhole, a free arm and a stretch stitch, and both brands offer machines with all three. Brother gives you an LCD and more stitch variety for the money; Singer gives you more speed. Our guide to the best sewing machine for making clothes goes model by model.
Quilting
Brother is the value pick (the CS7000X includes a wide table and quilt guide); Singer's 9960 is the better-equipped choice, with a walking foot and quarter-inch foot in the box.
Bags, denim and home decor
Singer. Its Heavy Duty listings are specific about power, speed and presser foot pressure, which is what thick seams need. See the best heavy-duty sewing machines.
Monograms and embroidery
Brother, by a wide margin.
The bottom line
For most people, Brother is the better buy: more of the features that make sewing easy, the top-selling machines in every category we checked, and no real competition in embroidery. Start with the Brother CS5055. If you sew heavy fabrics, Singer is the better buy, and the Singer Heavy Duty 4423 is the one to get. Want more on Singer's line-up?
